Child autism assessment
Understand your child’s communication, sensory experiences, strengths and support needs.
Understanding the whole person.
An autism assessment can help you understand your child’s developmental profile and consider support at home and school. We explore their experiences with curiosity and care, recognising that autistic children communicate, learn and relate in different ways.
Autism can shape communication, relationships, sensory experiences, interests and the need for predictability. We consider these experiences in context, alongside strengths, support needs and development over time.
What to expect
Initial information
Pre-assessment questionnaires help us understand the questions bringing you to assessment and the impact on daily life.
Developmental history
We explore early development and current experiences. Parent or caregiver information and relevant school observations help build a picture across settings.
Clinical interview and observation
Specialist interviews and observation explore communication, relationships, repetition, interests and sensory experiences. Tools such as the ADI-R and ADOS-2 may be used where appropriate to the assessment format and individual needs.
Clinical review and feedback
Information is considered together against diagnostic criteria, including alternative and co-occurring explanations. A feedback appointment gives you space to discuss the outcome.
Your written report
A report explains the assessment outcome, strengths and support needs, with practical recommendations for home and education. Report timings are agreed as part of your assessment arrangements.
Exploring autism and ADHD together?
If both may be relevant, an integrated assessment can consider overlapping and distinct experiences. Explore AuDHD assessments ↗
Your questions
How much does an autism assessment cost?
An autism assessment is £1,500. Any additional work is discussed before you commit.
Will an assessment always lead to a diagnosis?
No. An assessment explores whether diagnostic criteria are met and considers alternative or co-occurring explanations. Feedback focuses on understanding your profile and identifying useful next steps, whatever the outcome.
Can I discuss adjustments?
Yes. Please share any communication, sensory or processing needs before your appointment so that suitable adjustments can be considered.
